ABOUT Lofts at 90 SUMACH

A Converted Warehouse Loft

90 Sumach Street was converted from its origins as the CBC design building into hard lofts by Sorbara Development Group in the mid 1990’s. Erected in 1956 as a warehouse, 90 Sumach became the design centre in 1958 for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s television era. For decades the CBC’s archives, studios, rehearsal spaces and workshops thrived here. Respected artists such as Glenn Gould, Jim Henson and Lorne Michaels once worked within these walls. It is now home to a diverse range of artists, designers and other creative professionals.

Situated in downtown Toronto, Canada in a quiet Queen Street East residential neighbourhood called Corktown , 90 Sumach is one of the best and first examples of true hard loft conversion living in the city. All 109 suites feature 14′ ceilings and floor to ceiling windows. Many suites also have balconies, gas fireplaces and private roof terraces and separate storage lockers. There are two levels of indoor parking and 5 floors of residential. A wide variety of styles may be seen throughout the building as many units have been spectacularly renovated, each space is a unique reflection of its owner.

A beautiful common roof terrace that was newly rebuilt enjoys a spectacular west-facing view of the Toronto skyline. Two natural gas BBQ’s are available to all residents on the roof. The newly gated ground-level courtyard, south of the main entrance provides a lush, treed lined oasis with two BBQ’s of its own and plenty of tables and chairs for the perfect private gathering spot.

The building is also known as the “Brewery Lofts”, due to the developer’s original purchase of the surrounding Dominion building complex, which was originally part of an 1800’s era brewery.

Community

The Amenity Room off the main lobby is a great place for residents to hold community events and meetings. The 90 Sumach crowd is tightly knit, where neighbors get to know each other and enjoy a sense of community.

There is a fenced dog run opposite the parking garage entry which is enjoyed by many of the building’s pet owners.

Our P2 Lobby is home to the Sumach Book Exchange. This common space is filled with shelves of donated books for residents to share. We also have a FreeCycle table in our P2 garage where residents can deposit good-condition household items. The building is environmentally conscious, we have a full recycling program that includes organics and e-waste. Electric vehicle (EV) charging is now available to owners who wish to install chargers in their own parking spaces. All of the common area lighting was retrofitted to LED several years ago, which has dramatically reduced energy consumption and costs.

To the immediate north there is the historic Nelson Mandela public school, which has undergone a complete renovation, with the addition of a new Community Centre (including a full gym). The Regent Park district directly north of us is being entirely rebuilt into a beautiful new neighbourhood; which now is home to the new $15 million Regent Park Aquatic Centre.  There is also the new Cooper Koo YMCA  just south of us on Cherry Street (Sumach Street turns into Cherry Street), and we are within walking distance of the historic Distillery District.
